Moth Thoughts

What things there are to write, if one could only write them! My mind is full of gleaming thought; gay moods and mysterious, moth-like meditations hover in my imagination, fanning their painted wings. But always the rarest, those streaked with azure and the deepest crimson, flutter away beyond my reach.
~Logan Pearsall

This quote describes where I currently am in the writing process. I know exactly what I want to do with my story, I'm just not finding the words to do it yet. I've been invited to re-submit, so I need to get it done, but it just won't come. I'm also struggling to find quality focus time when work and children and sweet hubby need some time with me too.

We've all been here at one time or another. We all share the frustration. But I love the way this quote makes me feel about it.

Oh I love this quote! - but so frustrating!!!

It's hard to balance family and books...

Cool quote. I love it. And you will find the words. When you find the time to focus.

All these things pull at us from every direction. IT'S MADDENING, I TELL YOU! But the words will come Shannon. Just believe they will. I know it's hard to stay up late and then get up early for school. What about on Friday night. Maybe hubby can get up on Sat. morning with the kids to let you sleep in, because you stayed up late writing.

We have to squeeze out the time without letting it come between us and our family. So you sleep in just for a bit, and then get up to be with the hubby and kids. (^_^)

Elephant Hawk Moth! I've never seen one. How extraordinary and truly lovely. Thanks for putting up the photo and the gorgeous poem, which does resonate deeply.
I hope you catch those elusive thoughts and find time for writing.

What a beautiful quote, I had never heard it before. I feel your frustration and do hope you find your peace. Perhaps a long hot bath before your writing time?

Best wishes
Kristi

I'm in the same boat, trying to get a handle on the final revisions on my CB so it can go out on sub. The frustration lies in knowing people are waiting for it on the other end, and that it needs to be perfect because there's a lot riding on it. Ugh

We'll both get through it tho! Hugs all around!

I think you stole my brain to write this post. I have so much in my head that needs to go down, but the words haven't been cooperating lately. And yes, that wonderful distraction called family.

BTW, you've referred to me as Kasie in my last few posts. Which is okay because Kasie is beautiful and funny and talented. However, I thought you'd like to know.

I was having a similar problem yesterday. My MC just wouldn't say the right things. So frustrating! Sometimes it helps to look at the issue from a different perspective. I have no doubt you'll be able to figure out the right words soon. If not, you could always send it to me and I'll give you some input. :)

Jessie Oliveros said...

I suppose I have an ulterior motive for mentioning the name thing today. Not that Kasie shouldn't get as many points as possible, but I don't think she is playing.

I think that's why my first drafts are so messy - in my struggle to find just the very perfect right words, I dump everything imaginable onto the page and come up with a bunch of junk that I have to shift through. It's worth it in the end, though. Good luck finding your words!

Beautiful quote. Yes, life does get in the way doesn't it. Sometimes it's nice to just read a book or watch a movie to get the words flowing again! Good luck :o)

That is such a great quote. I hope you find your inspiration (and some free time) soon. :)

I definitely feel your pain. Those pesky words are so elusive sometimes.

i'm in the same place. great quote. i think of my wild thoughts as butterflies. very difficult to round up, esp. at night when all i want to do is sleep. that's when they come out to play.

Excellent quote!!! I agree though, splitting time between it all can be difficult!!! Hang in there!!

This is going on my wall of awesome. You are amazing -- the words will come. I have no doubt about that!

Love both the quote and the photo!

I'm with Elana - they'll come. Relax and take some family time.

Nice quote. And I feel your pain. Except, I kind of have the opposite problem. I can writer, but I can't figure out everything I want to happen in my story. It's always something, isn't it?

Happy Tuesday, Shannon!!!

Beautiful quote!

I feel the same way about my writing the majority of the time :D

Sometimes it seems like those words come wrapped up in "all or nothing" packages. I hope you find your "all" soon! Beautiful quote!

That is a great quote! That moth is stunning. Never seen one so beautiful.

((hugs)) You'll get where you need to be :)

That quote is total magic. As is the picture. I know how you feel. I often feel like I am not yet the writer I want to be to tell the stories that are in my head.

Kasie West said...

Great quote. I feel that way many times. And as far as how you feel (trying to divide myself between many important people/projects), I always feel that way too.

I love that quote! It's exactly how I feel today.

Wonderful quote! I find it takes a few drafts before I get something the way I want it. Until then it's rather elusive. I'm learning to deal with that.

You have such a knack for finding and using great quotes. And such a knack for blogging consistenly.

Your knack for revising will come.

You deserve it.

Tracy Loewer said...

Love the quote! Good luck working out those revisions. Keep a notebook handy so you can catch those perfect thoughts. I always get the best ideas for revising when I'm on the brink of sleep, and I never regret taking a minute to write them down!

Shannon, this is very poignant, and what a picture as well. And boy, am I ever feeling THIS. Even more than the elusiveness of specific words, though, it's more what you described -- inability to find adequate spaces with all else swirling about, and wondering what I'm supposed to do about that. Do I act as Martha, or Mary in this case? Do I let go, or persist with the busyness of trying to make space, and risk losing the chance to better love those around me?

Christine Danek said...

Great quote! You will get there. I can sympathize with trying to spread yourself in many directions. I am just getting out of a slump so I know it ends.
Good Luck!

Great quote. I finally had to set aside my manuscript for a couple of weeks, though I was only a chapter away from completing it, because I just couldn't force the prose. But I'm back at it this week and feeling good about it. Good luck!

Mary E Campbell said...

Wonderful quote and picture. I'm so with you on this. My book is all laid out in my mind, but I avoid writing it because my words just don't capture it the way I want them too. I guess this is true for most people though and I need to just press forward.

Shannon O'Donnell said...

Thanks to all of you for the kind and encouraging comments. I'm thrilled you all love the quote and the fun moth picture. I appreciate all of you more than you know! :-)

Kelly Polark said...

Oh, I've been there again and again. Lovely perspective! (beautiful quote and who ever knew there was a beautiful moth?)

Natalie said...

I'm there right now too. I need to just sit down and do it, but sometimes it's scary to commit to that.
