Butterflies of the Moment

It is necessary to write, if the days are not to slip emptily by. How else, indeed, to clap the net over the butterfly of the moment? For the moment passes, it is forgotten; the mood is gone; life itself is gone. That is where the writer scores over his fellows: he catches the changes of his mind on the hop. ~ Vita Sackville-West

I love that. We catch the changes of our minds on the hop. *sigh*

I think I need to take the beautiful journal I got from Shannon M., which has a butterfly on the front cover, and use it to collect my butterflies of the moment. I don't think I could come up with any more beautiful way to say "ideas" than that - butterflies of the moment.

How do you catch your butterflies of the moment - on the hop?
Ha ha. That is just too fun!

What about the jar? How do you contain the moments? Or are they meant to pass, just as we are?

I tried butterfly hopping last night. *Sigh* My arms didn't reach high enough, the moments passed. The ideas fluttered above me.

You are my quote soul sister :-) I LOVE every one you ever post!

OMG and I do the SAME thing with MY notebook from Shannon :-)

butterflies - that's exactly what my scattered ideas and thoughts feel like. catching them is always a challenge. i usually collect them in my laptop (if it's handy) or in a notebook i try to keep in my purse (which are then transferred to my laptop). sometimes i examine a particular butterfly story idea and play with it, other times i let them sit, but they're always waiting for me.

Jennie - I'll send out one prayer after another, all day long for you. Keep me posted!

Jonathon - Good point. Hmmm...

Tamika - Awww, that's so sad. We need to get you a net with a longer handle. :)

Sara - Does your have a butterfly on it, too? :-)

Michelle - Laptops do make very good nets. I've noticed that, too.

That really is lovely, but I do adore butterflies in any quote. I try to catch the butterflies of the moment- I carry a journal with me at all times. My husband likes to make fun of me as I'm scratching away.

Oh, Shannon, this is SUCH a delightful place...and answers your question (at least the first answer)

One way to capture those butterflies of the moment is on blogs!!! Doesn't that FLUTTER your stomach?
Also with my camera, which I've begun to carry EVERYWHERE. It's so fun capturing the little things that beautify our earth.

You are now on my blog roll!!! SOOO excited about that!!!

Great quote: Ideas can be as fleeting as butterflies.

Wow, I love that too. I try to slow down. My life is so hectic and I'm always listing what needs to be done. I need to learn to just breathe and enjoy.

Thanks for this quote. Maybe I can do it today.

That is a great concept. Might have to use the reference to butterflies myself some time. I've always been a fan of butterflies and morpho ones in particular. The idea of something that can look so plain and bland with their wings closed, but when the wings are open such iridescent beauty is discovered... amazes me.

I should do hard copies of my ideas as well. For now I use the stickies program on my mac but if BF has any say a new computer will be involved this year and it will be PC. No more stickies, then I'll need a new method.

What a beautiful idea! I think I need to start using this, too :)

Valerie - :-)

Stephanie - You are so adorable. I can just see you scratching away.

Patti - Wow. I'm blushing from your kindness! Thank you.

Mary - Yep!

Elana - Good luck. Breathe in...breathe out... :-)

Dawn - A new computer is so exciting. I hope you get one.

L.T. - Give it a try. :-)

I love that saying too! Ideas are like butterflies.

I try to keep a log of ideas on my compy. It's amazing to look back and see what's there. =)

Cute graphic!

Hmm, good idea. I received a journal with butterflies on the cover for my birthday. It's too small to contain my normal journaling, but it's perfect to net those "butterflies."

Blessings,
Susan :)

Carolyn - Sometimes I rediscover a fab idea I had totally forgotten. I love it when that happens.

Bane - Ouch! You are twisted, dude! I think I like it. :-)

Kimberly - Watch for them. Here they come.

Shelley - That's what I'm here for. :)

Jade - Hey! I love your blog just the way it is. :)

Bethany - :-)

Susan - Yay! Use it and start catching those beauties.

I love that idea of writers catching the moment, the mood, so they are not forgotten and the day does not slip emptily by. How true!

I've written a scene in a car on the back of a grocery receipt--does that count as 'on the hop?'

Oh, what an amazing quote. I love it!!! I feel that way about my kids sometimes. They are butterflies of the moment. A year form now, these two precious creatures will gone, metamorphosed into new beings.

Love butterflies--and this post. :)

Susan - Oooo, well said, Susan!

Angela - Ha ha ha. I am not at all surprised, and yes, I'd say it counts.

sarahjayne - You're welcome. :)

Jemi - Yay! Keep your net ready at all times.

Corey - *sniff, sniff* Shhhh, I don't want my babies to hear you. I'm hoping they'll stay butterflies a while longer.

Karen - Thanks. You are so sweet!

I'm afraid I've let too many butterflies get away from me. I need to be better about using my own journal.

But what a beautiful quote! You always give us such inspiring posts. Thanks for that.

Lovely quote. I journal. That allows me to capture a few butterflies. And I always carry a notebook, even have one by my bed in case I wake up in the middle of the night.

Kristen Torres-Toro said...

That is a great way to say it!

My butterflies are always getting away. And even when I do find a scrap of paper to write them on, when I re-read it later it's lost its magic...like the butterfly has lost its wings.

You find the nicest quotes ever. :)

I find my "butterflies of the moment" by text/e-mailing myself. I actually learned that if you send yourself a picture it gives you 1,000 characters. And then my pictures are backed up too. :)
