A Roof and Four Walls

"When we read a story, we inhabit it. The covers of the book are like a roof and four walls. What is to happen next will take place within the four walls of the story. And this is possible because the story's voice makes everything its own."
~ John Berger

  1. What a cool picture, Shannon! I'm currently living between the covers of Torment by Lauren Kate. I finished Fallen last week and had to dive right in. :) Have a good day!

  7. So neat! I want that book house :) I'm currently lost in Nevermore by Kelly Creagh, which I didn't expect to love as much as I do. Even though it's in the 60s and sunny here, I feel like I'm in a chilly, dark autumn as I read!

  8. Okay the quote is amazing but I am more than a little in love with that book house. Talk about an amazing place for a childhood (and adult!) fort!

  9. I am soooo building that today! I'm reading Sharp Teeth. It's pretty freaking awesome.

  10. I finished The Preacher's Bride last week. It was excellent. I need to start inhabiting another book soon.

  11. Fantastic picture to go with the quote--amazing! Books I'm inhabiting? One for every room it seems--The Help, Shiver, Bird by Bird...it's a fun house to live in :-)

  12. What a wonderful quote and picture! A really good book does feel like you're living it. Most recently I enjoyed entering the worlds of SHIP BREAKER and REVOLUTION.

  13. Fantastic analogy :) I am currently in a rich neighborhood of Charlotte in the book An Amish Christmas :)

  14. That is an amazing picture! I want a house like that. Better let my husband know.

As for books ... I've not been reading too much, mostly writing and living in the world I've created ;)

  15. That's an awesome picture!

I'm not reading anything right now, but I plan to start Punkzilla today. :D

  16. If I lived there, maybe I'd get something done. I've been a reading slacker lately but I'm rereading some Shannon Hale, because those are always good.

  17. I love that picture! I was just reading N. Spark's newest book but had to return it to the library before finishing it!! Whaaa.

  18. I love that quote :) I'm always living in a Jane Austen or Harry Potter novel, but I just finished Dirty Little Secrets which was great to wade around in, too.

  19. I'm actually not reading anything at a moment (I like to say I am "between books", haha) but I just love the picture and the quote!

  23. Cool pic, Shannon! (You have the neatest ideas!) I'm dyin' for a good read. The covers of the last two books I read were more interesting than the insides. But, thanks to some great blog reviews, have some great leads...with Recovering Charles by Jason Wright at the top.

  24. I probably have enough books to build one of those myself!
I'm just starting The Philosopher's Stone. Hope to get through the series over the next month.

  27. What a terrific photo and quote!!

I'm currently inhabiting 3 books - The Hating Game by Talli Roland, Breakthrough by Stephen Tremp and Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick. They are all awesome!!! :)

  28. I love that picture. But what happens if I want to read one in the middle or on the bottom? I am reading MATCHED.

  29. Great fun reading all the responses! I'm part way through Blue Fire by Janice Harding, and on my nightstand is Mermaids Don't Wear Toe Rings.

  30. Cool picture! I've seen desks made out of books, but nothing like this.

  31. I'm living in The Jungle by Upton Sinclair.

Yep, it's pretty gross. Thank goodness for the Pure Food and Drug Act and Meat Inspection Act. Yay Theodore Roosevelt!

  32. My dream house! :)

I'm living in REVOLUTION by Jennifer Donnelly. So far, it's f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s.

  33. Shannon, from what you've said in an earlier post, your kids could definitely make a fort out of books. Mine could too. Wish we could make a book road that leads from ND to MT and hide in it together, reading and dreaming. :)

I have about five books going right now, and each one is like a different room in a very large house. :)

  34. Love the house of books :)
I'm reading The Winter Ghosts by Kate Mosse - the hard-backed cover seemed very appropriate.

  35. Just toss on a roof and I totally want to live in that house. Though I'm sure it would be difficult to get insurance given what a huge fire hazzard it is, but whatev.

  36. Very cool pic! I'm finishing The Sword of Shanarra, the first Fantasy book I've read in decades. Terry Brooks is an excellent writer and its easy to place yourself directly into the setting alongside the characters.

  37. OMG, what an amazing photo! I am inhabiting the 985 page Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. A little tedious in spots (certainly no Pillars of the Earth!) but I like historical fiction so I am sticking with it.

  38. That is so cool! But what if I want a book at the bottom of the pile? j/k

I'm picking up Matched this weekend. So excited!

  39. How cool! I wonder how the person who built it made the arch work? Super glue? lol

  40. Great photo! I need to get into a book after doing some blog hopping. It's snowing and cold, a great day to inhabit a good book!
