Marvelous Middle Grade Monday
Shannon Whitney Messenger decided it was time to give middle grade stories the attention they deserve, and "Marvelous Middle Grade Mondays" was born.
The Magnificent 12: The Trap
by Michael Grant
Amazon Blurb:
In the thrilling second book of the Magnificent 12 series, Mack MacAvoy is challenged by his spectral mentor, Grimluk—who only appears in the shiny chrome pipes of bathrooms.
Mack must find the ancient ones, the great forgotten forces. Some will help; some not so much. But above all—
Time is short! The wicked Pale Queen’s three-thousand-year banishment ends in thirty-five days, and she will be free to destroy the world. It’s up to Mack to stop her return. But what do all of Grimluk’s clues mean? Can Mack achieve everything he must do without getting killed by the evil Risky—and escape the trap?
- Learn the ways of Vargran!
- Assemble the twelve!
- Go to the nine dragons of Daidu.
- Go to the Egge rocks.
- Beware of . . . the trap.
The Magnificent 12: The Trap is another fast-paced episode in bestselling author Michael Grant’s hilarious fantasy-adventure series.
First, I love, love, love Michael Grant. If he wrote it, you need to read it. Period. His YA GONE series is fantastic, but I can't tell you how much I enjoy this particular MG series (my review of book one is HERE).
I love the storyline of The Magnificent Twelve, but the characters and humor trump all. I think I would read this even if the storyline was only so-so, that's how great the characters are and how much I enjoy the humor.
The wild adventure begun in the The Call continues in The Trap, but the stakes are higher and we meet a new cast of characters along the way. While I love Mack and his phobias, Stefan is still my favorite character by far. He started out as a mega-bully, but he's just mega-hilarious! I adore him.

Wow! It must be good if your father-in-law read it too. I'll have to check it out. I love fantasy.
This series sounds fantastic! I read the first two books in the GOne series and they creeped me out so much, I couldn't read them at night. I'd love to read something a little lighter from Grant! Thanks for the tip :)
This sounds fabulous! Haven't read either. Adding to my TBR list....
Go Mack!! Yay! Take care

Hmmm, why don't I have any of his books in my classroom???? I'll have to fix that! :)
I didn't know he wrote MG. I love GONE, but then lost interest in the series (I think it's because there are too many povs).
I'll have to tell my boys about the MG series. It looks really good.
Michael Grant wrote a MG novel? How did I not know that?
GONE gave me nightmares for days. Those flying snakes! Eech!
But this series sounds like fun. I've shelved these books but never cracked them open. Thanks, Shannon! Maybe I would like his MG better. Adding to the list...
An adventure story with humor sounds like so much fun! I have to find out who this Stefan character is. :) Thanks for the recommendations!
i'm currently reading 'gone' right now, and love it! thank for letting us know about his venture into MG. yay!

Wow! I wonder if my father-in-law would love it??!!? :-)
Such a glowing recommendation, I'm sure my kids and I will love it too.
I LOVE it! This sounds right up my kids' alley(s). Thanks Shannon! I love MMGM!!
Love hearing about good humor writers. Excellent review!
A mega-bully who becomes mega-humorous?! This I gotta read!
I love Michael Grant too, huge GONE fan! So I've totally got to read this. Besides, the cover rocks. You can't go wrong with a dragon on the cover. :)
You had me with the mentor who only appears in the shiny chrome pipes of bathrooms. LOLOLOLOL! That sounds awesome! I'm putting it on my "books to give my son" list. Thanks for the tip!
I keep looking at these books and thinking I should pick them up. Now you've convinced me :)
Okay, by the names of everything alone, I'm adding this series to my list. I'm still laughing. Thanks!
