Slow and Steady

"Amazing friends; summer nights;
Chocolate ice cream; mud slide fights;
Half the summer is gone already
So let's spend the rest of it, slow and ready."
~ Unknown

It's summer, and that means no school, extra time with the kids, yardwork, vacations, laziness . . . So, can you guess what's missing? Writing. And blogging. And Facebooking. And Tweeting.

I'm still waiting to hear back on three fulls that are out there. While I wait (and wait and wait and wait) I should be more productive than I have been. I haven't written anything new all summer.  Soon . . .

Right after this road trip and a few more books in the backyard and another day or two at the pool!

How productive has your writing life been this summer?

Sending good vibes for the three fulls! I finally heard back from mine. I was rejected but it was the nicest rejection insisting I send my next project. So not all bad.

Enjoy your summer. The writing will come.

Three fulls out, that is awesome girl!!! Ah but the waiting, torture. The publishing industry slows down in the summer, that's for sure. I have a full out as well, though it's only been out going on three weeks.

I'm editing the sequel to my debut and even that has slowed down. Tis the season!

Awww GOOD LUCK Shannon!! Enjoy the rest of your summer with your family! Summer here has turned, cold, grey, miserable and rainy! Sigh! But I say we still have August so you never know! Yay!!

Take care

I find that being out on sub is a real writing-killer! I can't concentrate at all. Good luck, Shannon!

We are in the same boat! Summer with the family has been fast and fun, but my writing (and hearing from agents) has been super slow.

Fingers crossed for your fulls. I've actually been productive writing wise. Feeling too busy but glad it's at least slowing down.

Three fulls, that's great!
I'm thinking of officially declaring myself on summer vacation; that way I won't feel guilty about the meager amount of writing I'm producing. ;-)

So awesome to hear. I'm in a similar boat. (Waving to you from the wavy ocean!) Keep calm and carry on.

also waiting and revising. So glad it's summer though. I just love summer *sigh*

Every summer I think I'm going to have more time, but it always fills up with vacations, company, appointments, etc.

I have decided to embrace summer and its leisurely pace and drop the guilt. What happens, happens. I write some (but nothing major). I walk with my neighbor, unless the weather is bad. I hang with the kids, unless they have too many friends over. I do what needs doing, then sit down to read or play piano.

Hi Shannon .. no guilt - just enjoy the brief respite of summer and a break, enjoy your kids and family time .. so do as your 'Unknown' does .. spend the rest of it, slow and ready ... with an ice-cream in hand ... enjoy - Hilary

I was able to finish one first draft, and I'm starting on another. I work, as well, so my writing is a slow progression. I wish I could pop the novels out in record time, but I can't.

fingers crossed for you! I've finished an MS and just sent it out to betas yesterday so things are going well on the writing front! Lots of reading going on here too!

Three fulls! I'd never get anything done, I'd be pacing around the room all day...!

I've actually been more productive this summer than I've been all year... strange, I know! But it's good. I'm rewriting a novel from 2009 and it's going much better than expected... so far, anyway!

I've read a lot of books, so in that regard, it's been very productive.

Good luck on your fulls.

I actually don't like heat so I'm usually more productive in the summer :) Great question!

I've actually been writing a lot this summer. And when it's this flipping hot outside, it's a great excuse to stay in! (But the laptop on my lap doesn't help)

Good for you to have 3 MS's out there. Please keep us posted. Best of luck!

It sounds like you're having a great summer. And with three submissions out in the world, you deserve some time off from writing. Enjoy!

They say the best writing comes after periods of living life. So your best is yet to come! :) As for me, my journal is full but my manuscript has suffered. Good luck on your fulls!!

My summer hasn't been productive in writing OR hanging out at the pool, doing yard work, or having a spotless house. Sigh.

I wish you the best of luck on your fulls.

I've written and submitted a short story that's going to be in a poetry anthology this October. I've started three pages to make it into a book. I've started querying. That's it so far!

My writing hasn't been very productive for July. Had son's graduation party yesterday, so there was all the planning and buying for that. Then I'm also doing Christmas in July on my blog, so that has been keeping me very busy. August will be a great month to get a lot of writing in.

I think everyone needs a break from writing. You deserve it while you wait! enjoy the summer!
I've been doing the same as you. Waiting and not writing. Not even blogging!

Susan Oloier said...

Seems to be a common thread with many writers. I say, just enjoy what it is--writing or not!

Shari said...

Not as productive as it should be, but I have enjoyed some time away. I'm telling myself that I will be better prepared to write again after a break. No, I wouldn't call it rationalization.

Fingers, eyes and toes crossed for you, Shannon!

I think summer is about living. If you aren't having experiences you won't have anything to write about when winter sets in. (ACK! Winter...)

Charmaine Clancy said...

Winter here in Australia, so the perfect time to hole up and write. Take that notebook with you, and be inspired by the road trip!
