Marvelous Middle Grade Monday
Brotherband Chronicles
The Outcasts: Book 1
by John Flanagan
Blurb:
They are outcasts. Hal, Stig, and the others - they are the boys the others want no part of. Skandians, as any reader of Ranger's Apprentice could tell you, are known for their size and strength. Not these boys. Yet that doesn't mean they don't have skills. And courage - which they will need every ounce of to do battle at sea against the other bands, the Wolves and the Sharks, in the ultimate race. The icy waters make for a treacherous playing field . . . especially when not everyone thinks of it as playing.
John Flanagan, author of the international phenomenon Ranger's Apprentice, creates a new cast of characters to populate his world of Skandians and Araluens, a world millions of young readers around the world have come to know and admire. Full of seafaring adventures and epic battles, Book 1 of The Brotherband Chronicles is sure to thrill readers of Ranger's Apprentice while enticing a whole new generation just now discovering the books.
The Ranger's Apprentice is a favorite in my house--even my husband read and loved them, which is highly unusual. He is strictly into adult non-fiction most of the time. Needless to say, when this series came out, the demand for them was high and we had to take turns passing the book around. Happily, no one was disappointed. John Flanagan is a master of middle grade fiction, and does a wonderful job of balancing characters in a way that is appealing to both boy and girl readers. This is another great series full of fantastic adventure and likeable characters!

My son read and re-read the Ranger Apprentice series, and I'm sure he's seen these too. I'll have to ask and make sure.
Thanks for telling me about this book. I think it looks like a lot of fun, and I think my grandson would love it.
These do sound like a lot of fun! The cover is great too. Thanks for turning us onto them.
Great review! Finding books for middle grade boys is often difficult. This sounds like an exciting read.
I read a few Ranger Apprentice books in audio version and enjoyed them. Hope this comes out that way too.

never read 'em before. looks "swashbuckling." Who doesn't love outcast adventures? :-)
I'm ashamed to admit I still haven't read Ranger's Apprentice.
I was told I must read The Ranger's Apprentice series- but I still haven't picked them up. Hearing that your husband loves them too- makes me think I should get started. This sounds like another fabulous book!

I have Hunters right here beside me, and am planning a nice day of curling up with it!
I'm reading a ton of Middle Grade to catch up on all the amazing novels I've missed. And now that I'm writing them I think it's important to read what you write... after all, isn't that a wise rule?
Hope your Christmas was beyond fabulous!
I am so looking forward to starting this series, I must say. Book shopping spree in in my horizon oh yes it is!
Hope you are enjoying these Holidays and Happy New Year!
