Guest Post--Alecia Stone

As many of you know, I love sharing the success stories of other writers and how they finally achieved the dream of a published story. Today, I get to do that again.

As a special addition to the Talisman of El blog tour, I am fortunate to have this fabulous guest post by author Alecia Stone, sharing her writing journey with us.

Guest Post: A Writer’s Journey

by Alecia Stone

Three years ago, I had an experience that changed my life. I wrote a book called Talisman Of El. Why or where the idea came from, I don’t know, but within seven months of deciding to bring the story to life, I had a completed manuscript. I had never attempted to write fiction before as I never planned on being an author. At the time I began writing my first book, I had only written poetry and a few short film scripts. And then this character just popped up out of nowhere, and suddenly, I had a story to tell.

After I had completed the manuscript and went through all the editing process, I decided I needed to do something with the book. I couldn’t just let it gather dust. I had no idea about publishing, so I did my research and found out that it was a good idea to get an agent. So, I learned how to write a query letter and sent off my submissions. I received a number of requests for the manuscripts and some rather interesting feedback. I did receive two offers for publication from two independent publishers which I later declined as one of the feedbacks I received from an agent gave me the encouragement I needed to go about publishing this book myself. The submission process was a great learning tool, and it took me one step closer to realising how important this book was to me and how passionate I was about the story.

I’ll be honest. Writing a novel is hard work. Publishing a book is even harder. Marketing a book is on another level to writing and publishing. But, one thing can be said about all of them and it’s that they all require dedication and, more importantly, passion. I think, ultimately, every writer has to learn what’s right for them and take that path. I went from dreaming about writing a feature film script to having an Amazon bestselling novel and learning a hell of a lot about the publishing process. It just goes to show that life is full of surprises, and this was a pleasant one.

Alicia, thanks for sharing your road to publication. I find it interesting that you chose to self-publish rather using an agent or one of the small houses that made you an offer.

Wow, that seems very unusual that an agent recommended you self-publish especially when you had to acceptances, but it sounds like you did the right thing! Congratulations!
