Marvelous Middle Grade Monday
Guys Write For Guys Read
Edited by Jon Scieszka
What is a typical guy moment, anyhow? Daniel Pinkwater remembers thedisappointment of meeting his Lone Star Ranger hero up close and personal. Gordon Korman relishes the goofy ultra violence of the old Looney Tunes cartoons. Stephen King realizes that having your two hundred- pound babysitter fart on your five-year-old head prepares you for any literary criticism. And that's just a sampling from Guys Write for Guys Read, a fast-paced, high energy collection of short works: stories, essays, columns, cartoons, anecdotes, and artwork by today's most popular writers and illustrators.
Guys Write features work from Brian Jacques, Jerry Spinelli, Chris Crutcher, Mo Willems, Chris Van Allsburg, Matt Groening, Neil Gaiman, the editors and columnists from Sports Illustrated,The Onion and Esquire magazines, and more. Selected by voters at the Guys Read Web site and compiled by Jon Scieszka, this wide-ranging collection of authors and illustrators shows that guys do read . . . and will read more if given things they enjoy reading.
This is a wonderful resource for reluctant boy readers. The selections and amazing variety of popular author voices will hook them. Voracious readers will recognize and enjoy the all-star line-up of both authors and works. I have two copies in my classroom (purchased myself) and they are well-loved.
Happy Monday!

Sounds awesome! I'm going to buy two copies for my boys for Christmas.
Ha ha - sounds funny and perfect for boys. I posted my MMGM as well if you want to check it out.
Looking at the list of authors, I'd certainly pick it up. But I think it's a great idea for reluctant readers and it is too bad we lose so many boy readers after about 12 years of age. Love the Stephen King remark about his baby-sitter. Yes, my 40-something year old husband (boy) has assured me on many occasions that farts are always funny.

p.s. I noticed I'm not on your MGM list. I do write one each week :-)
Sounds terrific, Shannon! I've shelved these books (there's also Funny Business and Thriller) but I can't believe I've never read them.
What an awesome idea for a book! Sounds like the perfect thing to have in your classroom.
Wow, what a genius idea and that's quite a collection of amazing writers. I want to read this!
What a fantastic collection! Brilliant!! Let's hope this will inspire boys to be writers and readers! Yay! take care

My son, although not a reluctant reader, loves anything with boy humor and a fast pace. That's pretty much how he lives his life too. :-)
This book sounds great. I have a daughter who loves to read, but I also have two brilliant nephews who NEVER read and it drives me crazy. Anything please!
If I ever have a son, this will be required reading for me. Great choice.
Stephen King had a 200 pound babysitter fart on his head??? Wow, this is the great revenge, eh?
My Blog
this sounds hilarious. (May I say that I love this weekly meme, too?)
Boys need more books! This is awesomely extraordinarily cool! Wonderful choice!!!!!!!! You sure know how to pick 'em!
Much loved here too!
Sounds like a great book for boys. Too bad there aren't more books with male characters as they age up.
That's good to know! It's hard to find good reads for boys.
The boys in my class LOVE this book (I have a few copies as well!). I've read several of the stories and they are lots of fun! :)
I know just who to buy this for this year. Thank you for helping me figure out one item on my holiday shopping list!
Must get. Must read. EEK on the babysitter story, just eek! Thanks for telling us about this one.

satta king Ask your doctor how many times they have done this procedure sucessfully. You want a surgeon who has a steady hand and lots of good results.
