The 12 1/2 Rules

"People create their own success by learning what they need to learn and then by practicing it until they become proficient at it."
~ Brian tracy

I used this poster in a blog post over a year ago, but I think it's worth sharing again now - especially since I have so many new followers. I love, love, love it.

Is there anything you would add to this list?

That was great, especially the try something new.

Great poster! But I disagree with point two. If you've read something a hundred million times of course it's going to bore you! But it will be new and excting to a reader if it was exciting when you first wrote it.

Just wonderful! The adage about boring writing/reading is so true...as is the exciting writing/reading. I'm learning that a true gauge of the story is when I am continually excited by it and can't wait to revisit my characters. :)

Give yourself permission to be other things besides a writer. You know, mom, wife, teacher, etc. Wear all your hats and be grateful for the time spent in each one.

I love it...I think one of the hardest things about writing was convincing myself that I need to give myself time to get better. Practice, practice, practice...and READ.

Oh my gosh I wasn't around when you posted this but I'm so glad you reposted it because it's amazing!!!!

#6 is a huge pet peeve of mine, several people say "I'm too busy to read" and Stephen King says "If you're too busy to read than you are too busy to write"

Thanks for sharing!

I adore that quote! Seriously, where do you find these nuggets of wisdom? :)

I think it's essential to do that kind of meta-thinking about your learning - of the craft, of the business, of your own place in it. The world is constantly evolving around us, so we have to keep learning to keep up and succeed. :)
